Resume of last five races in Monaco:
2010 - Mark Webber, Red Bull
Webber led a Red Bull one-two to take the lead in the championship and became only the second Australian to win in the principality, and first since Jack Brabham in 1959. Webber started on pole for his second win in a row. Button retired on lap 3 with an overheated engine after a bung was left in his car's air intake.
-
2009 - Jenson Button (Britain) Brawn
Button took his fifth win in six races, leading a Brawn one-two after starting on pole. His only mistake was to park in the wrong place after the chequered flag, the Briton then leaped out of the car to run along the straight from the pit lane. Rubens Barrichello was second.
-
2008 - Lewis Hamilton (Britain) McLaren
Hamilton won to take the championship lead despite starting third and having to make an unscheduled pitstop after hitting the barriers on lap six. The race ended two laps early after the two hour mark was reached.
-
2007 - Fernando Alonso (Spain) McLaren
Alonso won for the second year in a row, with team mate Hamilton completing a dominant McLaren one-two. Alonso started on pole and set the fastest lap, but Hamilton was unhappy and suggested he had been forced by his team into a supporting role.
-
2006 - Alonso, Renault
Alonso won but Ferrari's Michael Schumacher provided the main talking point after qualifying. The German was branded a cheat by some and sent from pole to last for deliberately obstructing rivals. He finished fifth.

THE CIRCUIT
Qualifying is crucial, given how difficult it is to overtake. Whether that changes this year with the arrival of the moveable rear wing (DRS) remains to be seen.
The world's most famous street circuit offers no margin for error and the crash barriers are unforgiving. Overall speeds are relatively low, with the maximum of about 290 kph through the tunnel section, and the track is tight and twisty. The minimum speed is 50kph and the average lap speed 182kph.
There are around 55 gear changes per lap and in the old days, drivers would end up with blistered hands.
Based on previous races, there is a 60 percent probability of the safety car being deployed.
