TROPEA, Italy (Reuters) - Italian Oscar Gatto beat Spain's Alberto Contador to take a solo win on the eighth stage of the Giro d'Italia on Saturday.
After a largely flat stage from Sapri to Tropea that was expected to end in a bunch sprint, first Gatto then Contador attacked on a short, sharp climb just before the final kilometre.
Gatto won the stage, with Contador finishing second and a few metres ahead of the rest of the field. Pieter Weening of Holland remained the overall leader.
The Giro finishes in Milan on May 29.
