MORBEGNO, Italy, May 26 (Reuters) - Alberto Contador’s Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) hearing over a failed dope test could be delayed until after the Tour de France, the three-times Tour champion’s spokesman has said.
“Next week, there will be a meeting to provisionally set up possible dates for the hearing.”
Contador, who tested positive for the banned anabolic agent clenbuterol during last year’s Tour, has been cleared by the Spanish cycling federation but the International Cycling Union (UCI) and the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) both appealed the decision.
Contador is allowed to race until the appeal process is over and currently leads of the Giro d’Italia. This year’s Tour de France runs from July 2-24.
CAS originally set aside June 6-8 for the hearing to take place but the Spaniard may now compete in the race before the Lausanne-based body meets to decide his fate.
“What is clear is that the dates of June 6, 7, 8 for the hearing are no longer applicable. It’s not at all clear whether the hearing will even take place before the Tour de France,” Jacinto Vidarte told Reuters on Thursday.“Next week, there will be a meeting to provisionally set up possible dates for the hearing.”
