Cavani's hat-trick pushes Napoli into second place

Edinson Cavani scored a hat-trick as Napoli on Sunday defeated Lazio 4-3 from two goals down and moved into second place in the Italian Serie A.Stefano Mauri and Brazilian Andre Dias had given Lazio a 2-0 lead that Cavani and Andrea Dossena equalized before an own goal from Salvatore Aronica and two more goals by the Uruguayan ace Cavani.Cavani drew level on 25
goals with Antonio Di Natale, who failed to score later Sunday as Udinese lost 2-0 at lowly Lecce, with Andrea Bertolacci getting both goals.

"I do not know how close this dream (of the scudetto) truly is," Cavani said. "Our attitude is always the same. Try to win every game and do our best. Then we will do the reckoning at the end of the season."

Napoli are three points behind leaders AC Milan, who late Saturday trounced Inter Milan 3-0 in a city derby marked by a brace from Brazil striker Pato.

Title holders Inter slipped five points from the top with seven games left and were leapfrogged by Napoli.

At the San Paolo stadium, Napoli were stunned on 28 minutes when Lazio captain Mauri leapt past two defenders and found the net with a low shot by the left post. Dias confirmed Lazio's ruthlessness in the 56th, volleying home a swerving freekick from Spaniard Javier Garrido for 2-0.

Napoli fought back two minutes later when Dossena nodded home from close range on the hour and Cavani headed the equalizer.

More drama awaited the home fans as Aronica deflected into his own goal to Lazio one up again, 3-2.

But Giuseppe Biava worsened things for Lazio when he was red carded for a foul on the goal-bound Cavani, who levelled for 3-3 from the spot on 82 minutes and then also lobbed the 4-3 match winner with two minutes left.

In other Sunday action, Catania crushed Palermo 4-0 in a Sicily derby and Fiorentina drew 2-2 with lowly Cesena despite goals from internationals Alberto Gilardino and Riccardo Montolivo.

Cagliari won 1-0 away to Genoa, bottom side Bari won 2-1 at Parma, while Chievo and Sampdoria drew 0-0.

A volley from Juventus Serb Milos Krasic and a counter-attack break from Alessandro Matri late Sunday sealed a 2-0 win away to guests Roma in a classic tie.

The Turin side missed goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon, defender Giorgio Chiellini and captain Alessandro Del Piero as they drew within two points of Roma in the race to secure the second of two Europa League berths.

On Saturday, strugglers Brescia got a lifeline with a 3-1 home victory against mid-table Bologna.
