Penalty experts Sevilla move up to fifth

Sevilla moved up to fifth place in the Spanish Liga on Sunday with a 3-1 home defeat of lowly Zaragoza, thanks to two second-half penalties.Diego Perotti opened the scoring for Sevilla two minutes from half-time by turning in a perfect low centre from Jesus Navas.Two minutes into the second half, Zaragoza defender Jiri Jarosik made it 1-1 by heading in a near-post free-kick from
Gabi. But in the 56th minute, veteran Frederic Kanoute restored Sevilla's lead with a calm penalty, after Martin Caceres had been pulled down by Leonardo Ponzio.
Alvaro Negredo made it 3-1 for the hosts in injury time with another penalty, after being pulled down himself by Paulo da Silva.

Sevilla now have 45 points from 30 games, which is nine fewer than fourth-placed Villarreal, but two more than sixth-placed Espanyol.

Villarreal lost 1-0 at home to runaway leaders Barcelona on Saturday, a result that leaves Barca eight points ahead of Real Madrid. On Saturday Real surprisingly crashed 1-0 at home to Sporting Gijon.

Villarreal are three points behind third-placed Valencia, who enjoyed a 4-2 win at Getafe on Saturday, with Roberto Soldado scoring all four goals.

Espanyol, who have 43 points, crashed 2-1 at home to Racing Santander on Sunday.

Pablo Osvaldo gave Espanyol the lead from a disputed penalty, only for Santander to turn the tables on them with goals from Gonzalo Colsa and Giovani, who is on loan from Tottenham.

Espanyol are one point above Atletico Madrid and Athletic Bilbao, who share seventh place.

Atletico Madrid won 3-2 at Osasuna in Sunday's late game, with a hat-trick from Brazilian youngster Diego Costa.

Bilbao, for their part, were due to visit bottom team Almeria on Monday.

Sunday also saw important wins for struggling sides Deportivo Coruna, Hercules and Levante.

Deportivo came from behind to beat Mallorca 2-1 at home, thanks to second-half goals from Xisco and Lassad Nouioui.

Hercules, meanwhile, won 3-1 at Real Sociedad thanks to late goals from former Real Madrid players Javier Portillo and Royston Drenthe. It was a perfect start on the Hercules bench for new coach Miroslav Djukic.

Dujic said that "it was wonderful to win like this, but we still have a lot of hard work to do together in order to make ourselves safe."

Levante, for their part, beat troubled Malaga 3-1 with two goals from Christian Stuani and one from Ruben Suarez.

Almeria are bottom with just 26 points, three fewer than Malaga and Hercules. Then come Zaragoza on 30, and Deportivo and Getafe on 34.
