Platini and Zwanziger elected - Blatter electioneering

Europe's governing football body UEFA on Tuesday unanimously re-elected Frenchman Michel Platini as president.
The former international was elected by acclimation at the UEFA congress that is being held in Paris, where German football boss Theo Zwanziger was voted onto the FIFA executive.
The congress also saw the first show-down between FIFA president Joseph Blatter and president-wannabe Mohamed bin Hammam, who is challenging the incumbent.
When Plattini was elected after the lunch-break the 53 delegates did not even raise their hands, they simply applauded for the Frenchman, who thanked them for their support.

Plattini beat Sweden's Lennart Johansson in 2007 to take over UEFA and has since then campaigned for football and against the ongoing commercialization of the sport.
The most important project Plattini is hoping to introduce during his second term in office is the so-called Financial Fair Play, which attempts to prevent clubs from over-extending financially and create equality between the top leagues in Europe.

Plattini also made an appeal to politicians to support football in their fight against violence in the stadiums and against match- fixing.

Blatter, who addressed the congress, announced that if elected later this year to a fourth term in office, it would be his last. "You know well that I am a candidate for another four years. They will be the last four years," the 75-year-old Swiss national said.

He called on the delegates to support him. "I invite you to continue working with FIFA and the president. We should attempt to continue with this adventure," he said, without mentioning the name of his opponent.

Bin Hammam watched Blatter's speech from the front row in the auditorium and then said during the coffee break: "We now have a competition and then we will see what happens."

Blatter seems to be the preferred candidate for the majority of UEFA delegates though and a high-ranking official said that Blatter will easily win the election.
