Franck Ribery struck in the 88th minute to give Bayern Munich a 2-1 win at Freiburg to keep their Champions League qualification hopes alive in the Bundesliga Saturday.
Leaders Borussia Dortmund meanwhile conceded a controversial late goal in a 1-1 draw with visiting Mainz to move 10 points ahead of second-placed Bayer Leverkusen who are playing Sunday.
Didier Ya Konan and Mohammed Abdellaoue scored in each half as Hanover defeated Hoffenheim 2-0 to stay third two points ahead of Bayern on 50 points - a club record.

Nuri Sahin had the chance to make it two but his penalty in the 19th minute, after Christian Wetklo in goal was brought down Lucas Barrios, was then saved by the keeper.
And Dortmund, who had last week lost to Hoffenheim, were punished when they conceded a contentious goal by substitute Petar Sliskovic in the 89th minute.
Dortmund players complained Mainz should have put the ball out of play because the home side's central defender Neven Subotic lay injured outside their penalty area after being hit by a shot in the midriff.
Mainz regained the ball near the halfway line and moved the ball down the right. Marcel Risse crossed and, with Subotic missing in the centre, Sliskovic controlled the ball before firing home.
There were protests on the touchline from Dortmund coach Juergen Klopp who continued a heated debate with Mainz coach Thomas Tuchel after the game.
"It is not legitimate to say we were unfair because you cannot prove that my players saw this (the injured Subotic) and deliberately played on," Tuchel said on Sky TV.
Klopp responded: "You saw Subotic lying there and you were all celebrating (the goal). I would have been slightly ashamed."
Bundesliga top scorer Mario Gomez headed a ninth-minute opener for Bayern at Freiburg but Papiss Demba Cisse levelled in the 17th minute, three minutes after his penalty was saved by Thomas Kraft.
Ribery celebrated his recall to the France squad with a burst of speed and right foot shot from outside the area to earn Bayern all three points in a morale-booster after Tuesday's Champions League exit to Inter Milan.
Captain Philipp Lahm said: "We knew it would be difficult after the setback Tuesday. We played well in the second half, created many chances and in the end deserved to win.
"You don't always have to play well. We need success, always need the three points and then we will reach the Champions League in the end."
Elsewhere, Mladen Petric scored a first-half hat-trick as SV Hamburg trounced Cologne 6-2 in the first game in charge for caretaker coach Michael Oenning.
Also on target were Anis Ben-Hatira, Gojka Kacar and 36-year-old Brazilian Ze Roberto, playing his 330th Bundesliga game, equalling a game record for a foreign player in the league set by Bosnian Sergej Barbarez, a former Hamburg player.
Greek striker Theofanis Gekas scored both goals, the first from the penalty spot, as Eintracht Frankfurt defeated fellow strugglers 2-1 for their first win in 10 games.
