Construction at Poland's National Stadium in Warsaw, venue of the opening match of Euro 2012, is running behind the UEFA deadline by about six months, the daily Puls Biznesu reported on Wednesday.
UEFA's deadline for the construction is in June, but contractors told the daily that work at the stadium would likely continue for another six months after that date. The opening match of the Euro 2012 tournament is scheduled for June 8, 2012.
There are delays that can no longer be made up, the daily quoted an anonymous head of a contracting company as saying. The CEO said the stadium would be ready for use by June, but that work on it would likely continue until the end of this year.
There are delays in work on electrical wiring and sewage systems, which should have been completed in February, the daily said.
A spokesman at the international consortium which hired the subcontractors said construction work was on schedule.
Poland and co-host Ukraine were controversial choices to host the prestigious tournament. They have both come under fire for slow progress in building infrastructure for the tournament.
Four Polish cities are hosting the tournament: Warsaw, Poznan, Gdansk and Wroclaw. Ukraine's host cities are Kiev, Lviv, Donetsk and Kharkiv.
