Rome (dpa) - Gianfranco Zola has been appointed new coach at his
former club Cagliari after the dismissal of Zdenek Zeman, the Serie A
club said.
A statement late Wednesday said that Zola, 48, was to
begin coaching the Sardinia side on Sunday when they resume training for the league restart on January 5. Cagliari visit mid-table Palermo on January 6.
Cagliari sit third from-last in the drop zone on 12 points from 16 games, of which they have won only two. The poor run cost the Czech Zeman the job after just four months on Tuesday.
Cagliari said Zola and assistant coach Pierluigi Casiraghi, also a former Italy player, will use their "international experience and their winning mentality ... to get the results that all the fans of Cagliari deserve."
Zola began playing in small clubs of his native Sardinia, spending his professional career at Napoli, where he won the 1990 Serie A title, Parma and Chelsea, before his last two seasons at Cagliari.
He won 35 Italy caps and ended his playing career at Cagliari 2003-2005.
He coached West Ham, the Italian national youth team, and Watford.
In 2003, at the end of seven-year stint at Chelsea, fans voted him best ever player of the London club. A year later he was named Honorary Member of the Order of the British Empire (OBE).
