Mauri's brace pushes Lazio into third place

Rome (dpa) - Lazio beat Atalanta 3-0 from a Stefano Mauri brace and Senad Lulic header Saturday to go third in the Italian Serie A.

The Rome side moved on 26 points from 15 games, with a better goal
difference than Genoa, also on 26 before Sunday's home game to second-place Roma (32).

After an uneventful first half at the Stadio Olimpico, captain Mauri deflected from close range on 51 and curled home from the edge of the box 20 minutes later before Lulic rounded off the score.

Atalanta suffered a seventh defeat and stayed on 14 points, three above the drop zone.

Earlier Saturday, newcomers Palermo moved clear of trouble thanks to a 2-1 home win over nine-man Sassuolo.

Midfielder Luca Rigoni nodded home from a corner kick on three minutes to give Palermo the lead and though substitute Leonardo Pavoletti levelled with five minutes left, Andrea Belotti, also a substitute, flicked home from close range in injury time.

Defending their 1-0 lead seemed easy for the Sicily hosts in the last 24 minutes after the dismissal of visiting goalkeeper Andrea Consigli for flooring the goal-bound Enzo Maresca.

But Sassuolo kept pressing and found the net when Pavoletti pounced on a feeble clearance to shoot into the left corner. Belotti slipped in the winner shortly after coming on before Sassuolo had Paolo Cannavaro sent off for a bad foul on Paulo Dybala.

Palermo are ninth on 21 points from 15 games and leapfrogged Sassuolo, on 19 and eight clear of the drop zone.

Leaders Juventus have 35 points when they welcome fourth-place Sampdoria on Sunday.
