Leaders Juventus held to draw, Roma close within one point

Rome (dpa) - Roma won 1-0 at 10-man Genoa Sunday and moved within one point of Serie A leaders Juventus, who were held 1-1 at home to Sampdoria.

Radja Nainggolan drilled home a great volley on 40 minutes, helping the Rome side move reach 35 points from 15 games. Genoa are level on 26 with Samp and third-placed Lazio.

Genoa had goalkeeper Mattia Perin dismissed on the half hour for
flooring Nainggolan and but substitute Eugenio Lamanna saved the ensuing penalty taken from Adem Ljajic.

Lamanna, however, was helpless nine minutes later as the Belgian international volleyed into the low right corner.

Home coach Giampiero Gasperini was also dismissed at the break for protesting over an alleged foul before Roma's winner.

In other action, Verona were aided by Luca Toni's 300th career goal to win 2-1 at Udinese, Fiorentina won 4-1 at 10-man strugglers Cesena and bottom side Parma drew 0-0 at home to Cagliari.

Juve dominated most of their earlier game with Samp, but scored only on a corner kick from Patrice Evra's header and were stunned by substitute Manolo Gabbiadini on one of the guests' rare offensive actions.

"We played a great first half, with many good chances," Juve coach Massimiliano Allegri said. "In the second we had more difficulties and Buffon made a great save.

"It was a pity not to have won. You cannot play 90 minutes as we did the first half. There were some chances we should have profited from, but the team did their maximum, coming from many difficult games. But we are still top and this is what matters."

Allegri rested play-maker Andrea Pirlo and had Giorgio Chiellini suspended in defence, but his side took off at a fast pace, forcing goalkeeper Sergio Romero to save efforts from Carlos Tevez and Alvaro Morata before Evra stunned him on 12 minutes.

Claudio Marchisio threatened on 21 with a nasty shot before Paul Pogba missed from close range and Tevez fired centrally to confirm Juve's ineffectiveness upfront.

Argentine Roberto Pereyra fired high and saw his fellow countryman Romero save his shot early in the second half, but Juve paid dearly for they missed chances when Gabbiadini on 51 stunned Gianluigi Buffon with a low swerving shot into the far corner.

Gabbiadini's goal ended a run of 25 straight Serie A wins that the Bianconeri clinched at the Juventus Stadium. He forced another spectacular save with five minutes left as Angelo Ogbonna deflected his drive from outside the box.

"When I get onto the pitch I look at the team I play for. I scored and I am happy," said Gabbiadini, who looks set to leave Samp in January.

"(Juve) are very strong here, and also away. We struggled as expected, but we stayed into the game and got the draw."

AC Milan v Napoli is played later Sunday, with two more games set for Monday. Saturday action saw Lazio beat Atalanta 3-0 and Palermo win 2-1 at home to Sassuolo.
