Barcelona's Abidal to undergo liver transplant

Barcelona veteran defender Eric Abidal will have to undergo a liver transplant "in the next few weeks," the European champions said Thursday.
Barca's statement added that "the transplant was an option under consideration since the beginning of his treatment, a year ago." Abidal, 32, underwent emergency surgery in March 2011 to remove a tumour on his liver. He recovered in time to help Barca win the Champions League final two months later, but has recently complained about further problems connected with his liver. Abial - who joined Barca from Lyon in 2007 - is very popular among the Barca fans and players. Coach Pep Guardiola has employed him at left-back and in central defence, to equally good effect. Two months ago, the French veteran extended his contract with Barca for one more season, until June 2013. It is not clear for how long Abidal will be out of action. Barca are still without long-term injury victims David Villa, Ibrahim Affelay and Andreu Fontas, plus torn muscle victim Alexis Sanchez.
