Turkish federation, UEFA discuss match-fixing probe

ISTANBUL, July 18 (Reuters) - Turkish football federation officials will meet on Tuesday to discuss whether the new season should be delayed due to a major match-fixing investigation, a federation official said on Monday after talks with UEFA.
A Turkish court has already jailed pending trial 31 people, including the chairman of champions Fenerbahce and the coach and deputy chairman of Besiktas on charges of match fixing which have plunged preparations for the new season into chaos.
“UEFA is not doing anything at the moment other than supporting the federation. We expect documents (regarding the investigation) to start reaching us this week,” federation deputy chairman Lutfi Aribogan told reporters in televised comments after meeting UEFA officials in Nyon.
“We will discuss the starting date for the season tomorrow,” he added. The federation chairman has previously said the season, scheduled to start on Aug. 5, will not be delayed.
Fenerbahce, one of the club’s at the centre of the police investigation, are set to play in the lucrative Champions League along with runners-up Trabzonspor.
However, the federation has the authority to ban clubs from competitions or relegate them.
