CAP FREHEL, France (AP)—A brief look at Wednesday’s fifth stage of the Tour de France:
Stage: A 164.5-kilometer ride from Carhaix to Cap Frehel. The
stage was marred by several crashes involving Tour contenders Alberto Contador, Bradley Wiggins, Robert Gesink and Janez Brajkovic, who retired with a fractured collarbone and concussion.
Winner: British sprinter Mark Cavendish, who surged in the last stretch to beat Belgian rider Philippe Gilbert and Jose Joaquin Rojas of Spain on the line.
Yellow Jersey: Thor Hushovd kept the overall lead, 1 second ahead of Australian cyclist Cadel Evans. Frank Schleck of Luxembourg remained third, 4 seconds off the pace.
Where’s Contador? The three-time Tour de France winner fell after 72 kilometers when his chain came off. He scraped his right shoulder, elbow, and knee but didn’t lose any time. Contador is 39th overall, 1 minute, 42 seconds behind Hushovd.

Next stage: Thursday’s 226.5-kilometer sixth stage from Dinan to Lisieux is the longest of this year’s race. It features a 3-kilometer climb to the finish in the pilgrimage city of Lisieux.
