Swimming-China’s Wu claims fifth diving world title

SHANGHAI, July 16 (Reuters) - China’s Wu Minxia, roared on by a passionate home crowd, claimed her fifth three-metres synchronised springboard diving world title and the honour of winning the first gold medal of the Shanghai world swimming championships on Saturday.
Wu and partner He Zi blitzed the other 11 nations in the final, with a consistent set of dives and compiled a winning total of 356.40 points.
Canada’s Emilie Heymans and Jennifer Abel took the silver with 213.50 points, while Australian duo Anabelle Smith and Sharleen Stratton claimed third on 306.90 points.
The 25-year-old Wu won her first four world titles with the now retired Gu Jingjing, who also won five 3m synchronised gold medals.
China has dominated the event virtually since its inception at the world championships and have now won six successive world titles.
Wu and He had established a clear gulf on the rest of the field in qualifying, seemingly effortlessly accumulating 324.90 points, with their final three dives all in excess of 70 points.
However, they saved the best for last with their penultimate dive amassing 83.70 points, before they repeated the score with a back two-and-a-half somersault in the pike position, which confirmed the title and earned a deafening roar from the crowd at the outdoor venue.
