Rugby-Scotland's Southwell out of World Cup with knee injury

LONDON, July 27 (Reuters) - Scotland fullback Hugo Southwell will miss the Rugby World Cup after failing to recover from a knee injury, coach Andy Robinson said on Wednesday.
The 31-year-old Stade Francais player suffered the injury in May and has been battling to be fit in time for Scotland's tournament opener against Romania on Sept. 10.
"After talking this through with Hugo we've taken the decision to stand him down from our Rugby World Cup squad by mutual consent," Robinson said on the Scottish Rugby Union website (http://www.scottishrugby.org/).
"Hugo has been working hard to recover from a knee injury but has not been able to take a full part in our training camp and while he may be fit to resume playing in mid-late August both Hugo and I have decided that he will not be part of our World Cup plans.
"Hugo has been very diligent in his rehabilitation programme and I'm sure he will be determined to perform for Scotland again in the future."
Southwell, who has won 59 caps in a seven-year international career, played in all Scotland's games as they reached the World Cup quarter-finals in 2007.
He will not be replaced in Robinson's 38-man provisional squad.
The Scotland coach will name his final 30 for the tournament in New Zealand on Aug. 22, two days after their last warm-up match against Italy at Murrayfield.
