Real Madrid announces Emirates sponsorship deal

MADRID (AP)—Real Madrid has signed a five-year sponsorship deal with Dubai-based airline Emirates, club president Florentino Perez announced Friday.
Emirates senior vice president Salem Obaidalla told The Associated Press that the deal was worth “almost ?5 million ($7.2 million)” per year and instals the airline as an official partner, but does not include shirt sponsorship.
The airline will receive advertising areas within the Santiago Bernabeu stadium and a VIP box for its customers as part of the tie-up.
The deal does not affect Real’s current shirt sponsorship deal with Austrian gambling operator bwin, which pays the club around ?23 million ($33 million) per year and has a contract until 2013.
Emirates has other sponsorship deals in place with English club Arsenal, Italy’s AC Milan, Hamburg of Germany, France’s Paris St. Germain and Olympiacos of Greece.
Most of Real’s first-team squad attended the announcement of the deal, including captain Iker Casillas, forward Cristiano Ronaldo and new ?30 million ($43 million) signing Fabio Coentrao.
