India sacks coach, orders probe into doping scandal

New Delhi (dpa) - India′s sports ministry on Tuesday sacked a Ukrainian track and field coach and ordered a probe after eight athletes were suspended for failing dope tests, officials said.

Sports Minister Ajay Maken announced that Yuri Ogorodnik, coach of six tainted athletes, had been removed and other coaches would also be under scrutiny.
The minister also ordered the Sports Authority of India (SAI) to investigate and submit a report on how performance-enhancing drugs were available at national training camps.
"The positive dope tests of the eight athletes have brought disgrace to the sporting fraternity and the entire nation," Maken told reporters in New Delhi.
"We have decided to take some strong measures against the coaches and officials so such things don't occur again in the future," he said.
"I have asked SAI to immediately terminate the contract of the foreign coach. I have also asked the SAI director general to find out the role of the SAI officials involved in the doping scandal," he added.
Eight prominent athletes - seven women and one man - have tested positive for the banned anabolic steroids within a week, proving a setback for India's hopes at next year's Olympics games.
Quarter-milers Ashwini Akkunji, Mandeep Kaur, Sini Jose, Juana Murmu, Priyanka Pawar, Tiana Mary Thomas, shot-putter Sonia and men's long jumper Hari Krishnan Muralidharan had tested positive, leading to their provisional suspension by the Athletics Federation of India (AFI).
Akkunji, Kaur and Jose were part of the women's 4X400 metres relay team that won gold medals at last year's Commonwealth Games and Asian Games. dpa sk gb Author: Siddhartha Kumar
