SANDWICH, England, July 15 (Reuters) - World number one Luke Donald and second-ranked Lee Westwood were among a host of big-name players to miss the cut at the British Open on Friday.
Britain’s Donald, who won for the third time this season when he captured the Scottish Open title on Sunday, carded a 75 for a six-over total of 146 after a crushing finish saw him bogey the last four holes of his second round.
Westwood, like compatriot Donald still chasing his maiden major victory, also fell by the wayside after returning a 73 for 144.
“It’s very disappointing not to be here for the weekend,” Donald told reporters.
“I believe in my ability but for whatever reason it has just not happened for the last two majors,” said the Englishman, who tied 45th at last month’s U.S. Open.
“I feel like I’ve tried everything. I’ve played in countless majors and come close a couple of times but now I’ve got to figure out a way to contend a bit more.”
Donald had to deal with the worst of the winds as an early starter on Thursday and a later starter on Friday but he made no excuses.
“I probably got a little bit on the wrong side of the draw but some other guys have dealt with it better than I have,” he said.
Graeme McDowell, Matt Kuchar, Nick Watney, Ian Poulter, Francesco Molinari, Hunter Mahan, Alvaro Quiros,Angel Cabrera, Robert Karlsson, Geoff Ogilvy, Ross Fisher, Peter Hanson, Camilo Villegas and Matteo Manassero also missed the cut, which came at four-over par, just eight shots behind joint leaders Darren Clarke and Lucas Glover.
Former champions Padraig Harrington, Ernie Els, Todd Hamilton, Mark Calcavecchia, David Duval, Justin Leonard, John Daly and American Ben Curtis, winner of the event the last time it was played at Sandwich in 2003, were other casualties.
