Teenage star Varane signs for Real Madrid

LENS, France (AFP) - Highly-rated French defender Raphael Varane signed for Spanish giants Real Madrid from French Second Division side Lens the selling club's president Gervais Martel told AFP on Monday.

The 18-year-old - who has played just 23 Ligue 1 matches in a season that saw Lens relegated - signed a six year contract after passing his medical, Real announced when they confirmed the signing later on Monday.
"Real Madrid and Lens have reached agreement over the transfer of the French player Raphael Varane, who will wear the Real shirt for the next six seasons," Real said in a statement.
Varane, regarded as one of the most promising young defenders in French football, cost Real 10million euros according to sources close to the deals.
The young defender - who will be as good as a defender as former great Laurent Blanc according to Zinedine Zidane who is an advisor to the Real Madrid president - had been closely linked wth a 10million pounds move to English champions Manchester United last month.
