Twins' Liriano pitches no-hitter against White Sox

CHICAGO, May 3 (Reuters) - Minnesota left-hander Francisco Liriano pitched the first no-hitter of the Major League Baseball season on Tuesday to give the Twins a 1-0 win over the Chicago White Sox.
In his first complete-game, Liriano survived six walks and an unsteady ninth inning to hold the White Sox hitless.

In the final inning, Liriano walked a batter and fell behind 3-0 in the count before getting Adam Dunn to line out for the last out as his team mates mobbed him to celebrate on the mound.
The 27-year-old Liriano improved to just 2-4 on the year and his up-and-down season reflects what has been a stop-start career.
After a promising start to his rookie season in 2006, where he led the Major Leagues in ERA and made his only All Star appearance, Liriano underwent surgery on his throwing arm that forced him to miss all of 2007.
Liriano has struggled to recapture his old form since the surgery but his no-hitter against Chicago shows what he us capable of.
He is the first Minnesota pitcher to achieve a no-hitter since Eric Milton pulled it off in 1999. (Writing by Jahmal Corner in Los Angeles
