Sri Lanka edge towards big total on second day

CARDIFF, May 27 (Reuters) - England’s bowlers toiled in the afternoon session as a third Sri Lanka batsman hit a half-century and the team eased to 316 for six at tea on day two of the first test on Friday.
Prasanna Jayawardene was 69 not out and Thisara Perera, who should have been run out by Kevin Pietersen on 11, had 19.

England did manage to run out all-rounder Farveez Maharoof for 16 but it was a fortunate wicket as part-time bowler Jonathan Trott’s fingertips deflected a Jayawardene drive onto the stumps with Maharoof out of his ground to make it 278 for six.
James Anderson had figures of three for 62 but needed treatment for a stiff back that left England’ four-man attack a little short, with Stuart Broad (0-93) and Graeme Swann (one for 46) not at their best.
England’s only other wicket in the session was that of Thilan Samaraweera, who edged an Anderson out-swinger to Swann at second slip for 58 in the first over with the new ball.
Sri Lanka opted to use wicketkeeper Jayawardene at number six in this game for the first time having chosen five bowlers and he responded with a solid innings that has spanned almost three hours, despite a few edges through the slips.
Before lunch, key batsman Mahela Jayawardene did not add to his overnight score of four and in-form opener Tharanga Paranavitana departed for an impressive 66.
Conditions were warmer, brighter and generally much better than on Thursday when 42 overs were lost to rain.
Anderson struck in the third over of the day to end Mahela’s 48-minute struggle after the batsman edged to first slip Andrew Strauss, who pouched a good catch.
Left-hander Paranavitana’s innings was ended by Chris Tremlett when he played on attempting a cover drive without moving his feet. He batted resolutely and faced 191 balls.
Samaraweera, averaging 54 in tests, slightly improved his record in England having made 0, 6, 3 and 8 on the 2006 tour. But his survival was not without difficulty after requiring 14 balls to score his first run.
He twice narrowly avoided being caught off Tremlett, firstly by Alastair Cook at first slip and then at point by Eoin Morgan. Samaraweera also took a whack on his right elbow from a lifting Tremlett delivery.
England are seeking to build on their recent Ashes success as they look to become the top ranking test nation, while Sri Lanka are seeking a first test win in six matches.
