Ronaldo breaks scoring record for 102-goal Real Madrid

Cristiano Ronaldo set a new Spanish league scoring record on Saturday by bagging a brace in Real Madrid's 8-1 slaughter of relegated Almeria.

Ronaldo finished the season with an astonishing 40 goals, nine more than Barcelona idol Lionel Messi.

He will pick up the Liga top scorer's award as well as the European Golden Shoe.

Real scored 102 goals, the same tally as last season and seven more than champions Barcelona, who finished four points above them.

Ronaldo scored Real's first and seventh goals, taking advantage of some appalling Almeria defending.

In between, Emmanuel Adebayor - probably playing his last game for the whites before returning to Manchester City - netted three times and Karim Benzema twice. Youngster Joselu came off the bench to complete the rout.

Reserve goalkeeper Jerzy Dudek then said goodbye to the Estadio Bernabeu, which was in a exultant party mood.

Almeria, for their part, finished bottom with just 30 points. They go down together with Hercules - and a third team to be decided later Saturday. Six teams will be fighting to avoid the drop.

Zaragoza, Deportivo Coruna, Getafe, Real Sociedad, Mallorca and Osasuna all need to win to guarantee their survival.

Earlier Saturday, Barcelona finished their league programme with a 3-1 comeback win at midtable Malaga.

Pep Guardiola's side finish the season with 96 points from 38 games, three points less than last season.

Guardiola again fielded a reserve-packed side, resting stars including Lionel Messi, Xavi and Andres Iniesta ahead of the May 28 Champions League final against Manchester United.

Seba Fernandez shot Malaga into the lead in the 32nd minute after taking a pass from veteran Enzo Maresca.

Two minutes before half-time, Malaga's Eliseu pulled down Bojan in the box, and Bojan converted the resulting penalty himself to make it 1-1.

Bojan, 20, is likely to be loaned out by Barca this summer, possibly to Villarreal, in part exchange for Italian striker Guiseppe Rossi.

Ibrahim Afellay gave Barca the lead 15 minutes from time with a low drive, before defender Marc Batra made it 3-1 by heading in a corner.
