CARDIFF, May 26 (Reuters) - England and Sri Lanka were still waiting to start the first test on Thursday after more than three hours of play was washed out by persistent rain.
Captains Andrew Strauss and Tillakaratne Dilshan were due to meet for the toss at 0930 GMT but showers meant the ground was still covered when the umpires inspected the
conditions and the players eventually had an early lunch.
The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) had hoped the match would finally start at 1215 GMT but those plans were dashed following another downpour.
Sri Lanka were still waiting on the fitness of fast bowler Dilhara Fernando, though his chances of playing were rated doubtful on Wednesday because of a sore knee. Suranga Lakmal was expected to take his place.
This is the first test match for both teams since January, following England’s triumphant Ashes series win in Australia. Sri Lanka were beaten in the World Cup final in April.
Teams:
England (probable): Andrew Strauss, Alastair Cook, Jonathan Trott, Kevin Pietersen, Ian Bell, Eoin Morgan, Matt Prior, Stuart Broad, Graeme Swann, James Anderson, Chris Tremlett.
Sri Lanka (from): Tharanga Paranavitana, Tillakaratne Dilshan, Kumar Sangakkara, Mahela Jayawardene, Thilan Samaraweera, Prasanna Jayawardene, Farveez Maharoof, Thisara Perera, Rangana Herath, Dilhara Fernando, Chanaka Welegedera, Suranga Lakmal.
