PARIS, May 26 (Reuters) - Andy Murray defied swirling winds and dropped serves to defeat Italian Simone Bolelli 7-6 6-4 7-5 and book his place in the third round of the French Open on Thursday.
On a windswept court Philippe Chatrier, the fourth-seeded Briton showed signs of irritation but twice came back from a break down in the opener to force a tiebreak he
won 7-3 as Bolelli made a flurry of unforced errors.
Murray also dropped serve in the second set and third sets of an error-ridden match, but managed to raise his game when it mattered to seal victory with a backhand winner down the line after two hours 51 minutes.
The Scot, who will face either France’s Arnaud Clement or German Michael Berrer for a place in the last 16, was not too worried by his performance, though, saying the wind would make it tough for anyone to shine.
“There is a lot of scrappy points, a lot of scrappy games, and you’ve just got to try and chase as many balls down as you can, make them play one extra ball,” he told a news conference.
Murray, who is looking to claim his maiden grand slam title, said the result only mattered on Thursday.
“Today, like I say, I would have liked to have played a little bit better in my first round,” he said. “Today I just wanted to get through. I was really, really happy to come through today.”
