Tampa, FL, USA , May 3 (Reuters) - Tampa Bay Lightning struck with two third-period goals to capture a 4-3 victory over Washington on Tuesday that left the top-seeded Capitals on the verge of elimination from the East playoffs.
Trailing 3-2, Steven Stamkos netted at 5:23 in the third before Ryan Malone added another just 24 seconds later to speed the Lightning to a 3-0 lead in the best-of-seven series with the chance to sweep Washington at home in Game Four on Wednesday.
The Capitals clinched their fourth consecutive Southeast Division title during the regular season but have not advanced beyond the second round of the playoffs since 1998.
