Latvian banned for leaving opponent with concussion

BRATISLAVA, May 1 (Reuters) - Latvia's Arturs Kulda was given a three-match ban at the world championships on Sunday for a body check which left a Czech opponent with severe concussion and almost certainly out of the rest of the tournament.

The International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) said that Radek Martinek was left motionless on the ice following the challenge in the Czech Republic's 4-2 win on Saturday.
"The video showed Arturs Kulda jumping into the situation, hitting Martinek's head and neck area," Jan-Ake Edvinsson, chairman of the disciplinary panel, told the IIHF's website (www.iihf.com).
IIHF medical supervisor Beat Villiger said: "The player has suffered a severe concussion and a severe bruise.
"The scan showed no further injuries, but there is very little chance that he can play in the championship."
In Sunday's games, title favourites Russia, who suffered a stunning 2-0 defeat to Germany in their opening match, this time struggled to a late 6-4 win over Slovenia.
Although never behind, the Russians were being held 4-4 until the 57th minute when when Alexander Radulov's second goal of the game put them in front and Sergei Zinoviev added another with 38 seconds remaining.
Canada, another of the favourites, thrashed France 9-1.
