Italian Ulissi wins controversial Giro stage

TIRANO, Italy, May 25 (Reuters) - Diego Ulissi of Italy won a controversial stage 17 of the Giro d'Italia on Wednesday after the first rider across the line, Giovanni Visconti, was relegated to third for an irregular sprint.

The two riders formed part of a four-man breakaway that took off from a 16-strong attack group with six kilometres to go.
Visconti crossed the finish line in Tirano first but race officials awarded Ulissi the stage victory.
Alberto Contador of Spain, who finished in the main pack around three minutes back, retained the overall lead.
The Giro finishes on May 29 with an individual time trial in Milan.
