Golf-Pro-am tribute raises almost $1 million for Seve Foundation

VIRGINIA WATER, England, May 24 (Reuters) - More than 600,000 pounds ($967,000) has been raised for the Seve Ballesteros Foundation from the special Wentworth tribute to the late Spaniard, organisers said on Tuesday.

Ryder Cup captain Jose Maria Olazabal, eight-times European number one Colin Montgomerie, U.S. Open champion Graeme McDowell, Retief Goosen, Paul Casey, Justin Rose and Ross Fisher were among the competitors in Monday's 'Ole Seve' pro-am event.
The pro-am and a subsequent auction meant a total of 618,168 pounds ($996,100) was raised for the Seve Ballesteros Foundation and Cancer Research UK.
More than 1.3 million pounds has now been collected since the five-times major champion launched his foundation in December 2009.
"The foundation is Seve's biggest legacy," his nephew Ivan said in a news release. "He fought all the way and lost the battle ... but he started the foundation for research so that people can win these battles."
Seve died earlier this month at the age of 54 after a two-year battle with brain cancer.
