Goalkeeper's blunders hand Penarol 2-0 Libertadores win

BUENOS AIRES, May 11 (Reuters) - Two goalkeeping blunders handed five times champions Penarol a 2-0 victory over Universidad Catolica in the first leg of their Libertadores Cup quarter-final in Montevideo on Wednesday.

The Chilean team's goalkeeper Paulo Garces dropped a cross and striker Juan Manuel Olivera tapped the loose ball into the net to put his side ahead with his fifth goal in the competition in the 37th minute at the Centenario.

With the final seconds of added time ticking over, Garces spilt a long punt into his box and lurking Argentine striker Alejandro Martinuccio slotted in to give the Uruguayan side an unexpected two-goal advantage for next week's second leg.

"It's a good advantage but we must go out to play them as equals in Santiago. They are very strong at home," Martinuccio, man of the match, told Fox Sports.

"We've already seen in this Libertadores Cup that teams can win at home or away," he added recalling that Penarol upset Brazilian holders Internacional in Porto Alegre in the first knockout round.

Catolica came closest to a goal when defender Dario Rodriguez blocked striker Lucas Pratto's shot on the line.

Penarol could have gone ahead after only three minutes when Martinuccio crossed from close to the goal line across the face of the goal with Garces out of position but had no team mate able to make contact.

Minutes later, Catolica's Argentine left back Juan Eluchans was just wide of the far post with a shot following a 20-metre run through the defence juggling the ball without it touching the ground.

Santos, the only Brazilian side left in the competition after four were knocked out in the first knockout round, were away to Once Caldas of Colombia in a later kickoff.

Two Paraguayan teams are in action on Thursday when Libertad visit Argentina's Velez Sarsfield and Cerro Porteno are away to Chiapas in Mexico.
