Giro organizers promise to inspect course safety

MILAN (AP)—Giro d’Italia organizers have promised to inspect a new section of the race’s route in response to riders’ concerns following the death of Belgian cyclist Wouter Weylandt.



The descent of the Col de Crostis on the 14th stage on May 21 has never been used in the Giro and is partially unpaved. Riders are concerned that there are no crash barriers, just ski netting.

Race director Angelo Zomegnan told the Gazzetta dello Sport on Wednesday that he understands after Weylandt’s death that riders are “worried about the descent of the Crostis.”

Zomegnan said officials would be sent to check the sector, and that “our priority is that riders can participate in total security.”

Weylandt died Monday after he crashed during a descent during the Giro’s fourth stage.
