Garcia pulls out of British Open qualifying

DALLAS, May 23 (Reuters) - A painful finger injury forced Spain's Sergio Garcia to withdraw from the U.S. qualifying tournament for this year's British Open on Monday, jeopardising his chances of playing in golf's oldest major championship.

Garcia was due to play in Monday's one-day 36-hole qualifying event at the Gleneagles Country Club in Texas, where the top eight finishers get automatic entry to the British Open, but pulled out, saying he was unable to properly grip his clubs because of the injury.
Garcia has played in each of the last 13 editions of the British Open, with a best-finish of second in 2007, but is not guaranteed a start at Sandwich, England this year because his ranking has slipped to 73.
But the 31-year-old, who has struggled with his form and motivation over the past few years, expects to be back in action later this week and could enter other qualifying events yet to be played.
