PARIS, May 11 (Reuters) - Experienced back-rower Sebastien Chabal and centre Yannick Jauzion have been left out of France's preliminary squad for the World Cup, coach Marc Lievremont said on Wednesday.
Lievremont told reporters that 33-year-old Chabal, who has 62 caps
, had been dropped for "purely sporting" criteria and not because of his recent criticism of referees.
The coach has put his faith in Louis Picamoles and the uncapped Raphael Lakafia to fill the void left by Chabal, one of the most recognisable faces in rugby because of his long hair and warrior-like appearance.
"I think it is interesting to count on these two players with strong potential," the coach added ahead of the tournament in New Zealand from Sept 9-Oct 23.
Jauzion appears to have paid the price for some inconsistent displays as France lost their Six Nations crown earlier this year while fullback Clement Poitrenaud was also overlooked.
