NEW DELHI, May 1 (Reuters) - World number one Lee Chong Wei overcame a stiff challenge from Denmark's Peter Gade to win the India Open Super Series men's singles title on Sunday. The top-seeded Malaysian dropped his first game in the tournament but managed to eke out a 21-12 12-21 21-15 victory against the 34-year-old former All-England champion.
"It was a tough game. I lost focus in the second game," Chong Wei told reporters.
"It was very difficult to score points. Peter is vastly experienced. He plans very well for each game.
"At 34, Peter is still a good player and does not give up easily."
Chong Wei, who won the Commonwealth Games gold at the same venue in October, regained his confidence in the third game and it was plain sailing from there.
"When I was leading 6-2 in the second game, Lee's confidence was shaken," Gade said.
"I was playing a good length and made him come to me. I realised I need to be one step ahead of him if I have to beat him.
"It is all about confidence and when he is confident, he is unbeatable."
In women's singles, unseeded Porntip Buranaprasertsuk of Thailand beat third seed Bae Youn Joo of South Korea 21-13 21-16 to win her first Super Series title.
Japanese top seeds Miyuki Maeda and Satoko Suetsuna won the women's doubles while their compatriots Hirokatsu Hashimoto and Noriyasu Hirata claimed the men's doubles.
