Avalanche sign veteran forward Hejduk to one-year deal

DENVER, May 11 (Reuters) - Veteran forward and three-time All-Star Milan Hejduk has signed a one-year contract to stay with the Colorado Avalanche through the 2011-12 season, the NHL team said on Wednesday.

The 35-year-old Czech Republic native, who helped Colorado win the 2001 Stanley Cup, has played for the club for the last 12 years.

A triple Olympian, Hejduk has recorded 11 straight 20-goal seasons in Colorado, equalling Joe Sakic's franchise record.

"Milan has been a big part of our organisation throughout the past 12 seasons," Avalanche general manager Greg Sherman said in a statement. "He's been one of the top goal scorers in the NHL over the last decade and we look forward to having him back next season."

Hejduk played in 71 games for Colorado last season, scoring 22 goals and leading the club in power-play goals (10) and power-play points (24).

Originally selected by the Quebec Nordiques in the fourth round of the 1994 NHL Draft, Hejduk has recorded 357 goals and 400 assists in 910 games.

"My family and I are very excited to continue my career here in Denver," Hejduk, an All-Star in 2000, 2001 and 2009, said. "I believe in this organisation and our young players and look forward to helping the team in any way that I can."
