Real Madrid fans already looking forward to semi-finals

Fans of Spanish football giants Real Madrid are looking forward to the semi-finals of the Champions League for the first time since 2003.On Tuesday their talented team, the most expensive in world football history, trounced feeble Tottenham Hotspur 4-0 in a one-sided quarter-final first leg, putting a smile on the face of the "madridistas" for the first time in many years.

Despite their extravagant spending on players, the whites have won absolutely nothing since 2008. However, after Tuesday's exhibition, hope and expectation were palpable in the Madrid spring air.

The impressive win was greeted Wednesday with euphoria by Madrid media tired of writing about Real's Euro disappointments year after year.

One of the headlines of Marca was "The Kings of Europe!", pointing out that the whites are the team which has scored most goals in the Champions this season.

Another of Marca's headlines was "A Magical Night To Dream About The Tenth", in reference to Real's obsession with becoming the first club to win 10 European Cup or Champions League titles.

The headline in AS, meanwhile, was "The Tenth In Sight". AS singles out two-goal hero Emmanuel Adebayor and winger Angel Di Maria, scorer of the third goal, for special praise.

Radio station Cadena COPE, however, questioned whether Cristiano Ronaldo was really fit enough to have started the game, after being out for almost a month with muscle problems.

Cadena COPE said Real coach Jose Mourinho might be "close to making history", by becoming the first boss to guide three different teams to Champions glory.

The Portuguese coach won the trophy with Inter Milan last season and, against all odds, with FC Porto in 2004.

Cadena SER commented that watching Tuesday's win "was like travelling backwards on a time machine...back to the days when Real played with swagger, inspiration and authority, and to the days when the opponents used to be intimidated by the noise of the Estadio Bernabeu."

According to local television channel TeleMadrid, many "madridista" fans are already thinking about travelling to Barcelona to cheer on their team in the second leg of the semi-finals, away to Barca.

However, TeleMadrid also pointed out that most Real fans "would be delighted" to see Barca put out of the competition by underdogs Shakhtar Donetsk, their opponents in the quarter-finals.
