Queiroz to coach Iran's national football team

Carlos Queiroz on Monday signed a contract with the Iranian football federation to coach the national squad, ISNA news agency reported.According to the contract signed in Tehran, the Portuguese will be head coach of the country's national team for the next three and a half years.Queiroz said his main goal in Iran would be reaching the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. The former Portugal, South Africa and
Real Madrid coach was supposed to take over the team in February but initially rejected the job, reportedly because his family were not ready to live in Iran.

Iran's main aim is to qualify for the 2014 World Cup finals after missing the 2010 edition in South Africa and being knocked out of the Asian Cup in the quarter-finals by South Korea three months ago.

Critics say that Iran has become a second-class team in Asia and needs a first-class coach to reach the level of top Asian teams such as Japan and South Korea.
