Dortmund nearly there, Bayern thrash Leverkusen

Borussia Dortmund took a major step towards their fourth Bundesliga title with a 3-0 victory against SC Freiburg on Sunday. As second-placed Bayer Leverkusen were thrashed 5-1 at Bayern Munich in Sunday's early game, Dortmund have an eight point lead at the top of the standings. Dortmund are on 69 points, while Leverkusen are on 61.

Although Dortmund players have not yet openly said that they would win the league, the club's football director Michael Zorc admitted after the game that they were now close.

"It was a big step, no question about it," the former Dortmund player said.

At the end of the match Dortmund fans celebrated as if they had already secured the title, prompting Mats Hummels to say that: "I have seldom seen something like this, It was terrific, but I think the fans are realising that we are getting very close."

Dortmund coach Juergen Klopp said that his players went into every game giving 100 per cent. "This season has been very emotional for us, but it has been fantastic."

Mario Goetze opened the scoring for Dortmund in the 23rd minute after being set up by Marcel Schmelzer, beating Freiburg goalkeeper Oliver Baumann from close distance.

They scored a second two minutes from the break after Freiburg lost the ball in midfield and Hummels played a speculative pass into space which Oemer Toprak failed to clear, allowing the ball to come to Robert Lewandowski, who made no mistake.

Goetze turned provider in the 78th minute when he found himself in a one-on-one situation with Baumann but pushed the ball wide to Kevin Grosskreutz who scored into the empty goal.

With just four games remaining, it seems unlikely that Leverkusen will be able to catch Dortmund, who have been leading since the end of October.

In the earlier game Germany striker Mario Gomez scored a first- half hat-trick to add to Simon Rolfes' early own goal to give the home side a four-goal cushion at the break.

Bayern shifted back a couple of gears in the second half, allowing Leverkusen a consolation goal through Eren Derdiyok in the 62nd minute.

French international Ribery found a fifth goal for a rampant Bayern side in the 75th minute.

Gomez's three goals took him to the top of the scorer charts with 22 goals - two more than Freiburg's Papiss Demba Cisse.

The win sees Bayern in third place in the standings on 55 points - six behind Leverkusen. Hanover, who played to a goalless draw at SV Hamburg on Saturday are on 54.

Mainz 05, who beat bottom club Borussia Moenchengladbach on Friday, currently occupy the final position securing a European place next season. They are fifth.

At the wrong end of the table VfL Wolfsburg and St Pauli, who drew 2-2 on Saturday remain deep in relegation trouble. They are both on 29 points.

Eintracht Frankfurt (1-0 losers at Hoffenheim) and VfB Stuttgart (3-1 winners in Cologne) are on 33 points. Kaiserslautern, who lost 2-0 at home to Nuremberg are on 34 points, while Cologne have 35 points.

Even Werder Bremen on 35 points, after their 1-1 draw on Saturday against Schalke 04, remain in trouble.
