Bayern Munich Sunday dismissed coach Louis van Gaal with immediate effect.Assistant coach Andries Jonker will be in charge of the team for the five remaining games of the league season, Bayern said.Van Gaal had been due to leave the club at the end of the season after it was agreed last month to terminate his contract a year early.
Jupp Heynckes, currently with Bayer Leverkusen, has already been appointed his successor from next season.
But fears the team could miss out on next season's Champions League have now prompted the decision to part immediately with the coach.
A 1-1 draw at Nuremberg Saturday has seen Bayern drop to fourth in the table, one place out of a Champions League qualification spot.
Van Gaal was informed of his sacking after the return from Nuremberg Saturday evening, a club statement said.
Van Gaal's assistants Frans Hoek, Jos van Dijk and Max Reckers also leave the club.
Despite winning the league and cup double and reaching the Champions League final last season in his first season at the club, the 59-year-old Dutch coach was told in early March his contract would be terminated at the end of the season.
However the club had insisted last month Van Gaal would see out the rest of the campaign.
Bayern have had a disappointing season after last year's double and defeat to Inter Milan in the the Champions League final.
The team has been unable to challenge runaway leaders Borussis Dortmund and is also six points behind second-placed Bayer Leverkusen and now a point adrift of Hanover.
Bayern were also eliminated in the German Cup semi-final to Schalke 04 and to Inter Milan in the last 16 of the Champions League.
In April 2009, Bayern took a similar decision when they sacked Juergen Klinsmann in April 2009 shortly before the end of the season amid fears the team would miss out on Champions League qualification.
Heynckes was then hired as caretaker coach and Bayern finished the season second behind VfL Wolfsburg.
