Munich has thrice been venue for the cup final of Europe's top club competition. In 1979, it hosted the final of the then called European Champions' Cup between Nottingham Forest and Malmo FF, which the English club won 1-0.In 1993 Olympique Marseille b
eat AC Milan in the Champions League final in Munich and four years later German club Borussia Dortmund secured their to-date only Champions League success with a 3-1 victory against Juventus in Italy.
In all three seasons in which the city hosted the final, the city's most famous club - Bayern Munich - has not even qualified to participate in the competition - and that even though the club is by far Germany's most successful.
They finished the 1977/8 season a disappointing 12th, while the 1991/2 season was only marginally better with a 10th place finish and although they were second in the 1995/6 season, only the actual champions were allowed to enter the Champions League.
Next year Munich will host the Champions League final for the fourth time and again Bayern are in danger of watching idly as Europe's top clubs contend for the right to play in Munich - and that even though the three top-placed Bundesliga clubs qualify for the competition.
They missed out on an opportunity to move back into third on Saturday as they were held to a 1-1 draw at Eintracht Frankfurt for a result that leaves them one point behind Hanover 96 with just three matches to play.
Germany midfielder Thomas Mueller said that the draw in Frankfurt was very disappointing as it left them in a difficult situation. "We are fourth and can no longer achieve third place on our own. That is very disappointing and very worrisome. We achieved nothing with our good football which we only showed in phases."
Bastian Schweinsteiger added that they were still hoping they would finish third. "Of course it is not a nice feeling to have to depend on others.
"We have to beat Schalke and hope that Hanover drop point."
What makes Saturday's result even more difficult to accept for Bayern is that it came on the back of a wonderful 5-1 demolition of second-placed Bayer Leverkusen a week earlier, prompting stand in coach Andries Jonker to say that a draw in Frankfurt is not enough. "We simply did not do enough for three points."
Although Bayern have already made sure of playing at least in next season's Europa League, that would be scant consolation for missing out on a place in the Champions League.
Not only will Bayern suffer huge financial losses, it will also be a prestige-loss as only Manchester United (16), Real Madrid, Barcelona and Porto (15) have played more often in the Champions League group phase than Bayern (14).
It is thus not surprising that Bayern president Uli Hoeness has said that qualifying for the Champions League is a must.
However, whether that they do or not no longer depends entirely on themselves, it depends also on how Hanover do in their three remaining matches.
