Schalke 04 Wednesday dismissed coach and manager Felix Magath despite the team reaching the last eight of the Champions League and final of the German Cup.
The decision with immediate effect was taken at a supervisory board meeting at which Magath, 57, failed to appear.
Schalke are now Germany's only representative left in the Champions League following
Bayern Munich's exit Tuesday evening at the hands of holders Inter Milan.
But Magath's sacking had been on the cards after a disappointing league campaign and differences between the coach and supervisory board chairman Clemens Toennies
Magath, who had joined the club in 2009 with the aim of leading it to a first Bundesliga title by 2013, now becomes the eighth Bundesliga coach to lose his job before the end of the season
Toennies said the decision by the supervisory board was "a good result" for the club.
Whether Schalke will have to pay compensation to Magath, who had insisted last week he would fulfil his contract until 2013, was not immediately known.
"From the point of view of FC Schalke there are very good reasons for this parting. We will not communicate these publicly because judicial proceedings are now pending," Toennies said in a statement.
The supervisory board was "very relaxed" at the prospect of any legal action against it, he added.
Magath's media lawyer, Ralf Hoecker, meanwhile told German Press Agency dpa that Magath had not been told of his sacking and "unfortunately only learned of it through the media."
He added: "We are eagerly waiting to learn what the reasons are for the dismissal, which we have so far not been told," he said.
According to Bild daily's online edition, former Schalke coach Ralf Rangnick is the leading candidate to replace Magath. Rangnick has been out of a job since being sacked by Hoffenheim in early January.
Magath, who was also director for sport and communication and had all-round powers similar to those held previously in leading Wolfsburg to the title in 2009, has taken Schalke into the quarter-finals of the Champions League and final of the German Cup.
But the team is languishing in 10th place in the Bundesliga ahead of a visit Sunday to second-placed Bayer Leverkusen.
Magath had alienated Toennies and a section of the fans - although he had the support of others - who had criticised his transfer dealings and an alleged dictatorial style.
Schalke have appointed Horst Heldt director for sport and communication, while the role of finance, marketing and administration falls to Peter Peters.
