Ralf Rangnick was Thursday appointed coach of Schalke 04, the Bundesliga club said.
Rangnick, who left Hoffenheim at the start of the year, replaces Felix Magath who was dismissed by Schalke on Wednesday as coach and manager.
Rangnick, 52, has signed a contract until 2014, returning to a club he coached between September 2004 and December 2005. He will be formally presented on Monday.
Co-trainer Seppo Eichkorn wi
ll be in charge of the side in Sunday's Bundesliga match at second-placed Bayer Leverkusen. Rangnick's first game in charge - following a weekend of internationals - will be the visit to St Pauli on Friday April 1.
Rangnick had been linked with a number of Bundesliga clubs including Hamburg and Wolfsburg since he left Hoffenheim on January 1 "by mutual agreement" after four-and-a-half years at the club.
Rangnick's departure from Hoffenheim followed his opposition to the sale of 23-year-old Brazilian midfielder Luiz Gustavo to Bayern Munich. The transfer had been approved by the club's billionaire investor, Dietmar Hopp.
Schalke, 10th in the league, are now Germany's only representative left in the Champions League following Bayern Munich's exit Tuesday evening at the hands of holders Inter Milan. They are also in the final of the German Cup.
Magath's sacking followed differences between the coach and supervisory board chairman Clemens Toennies, who said he had also received complaints from the players' committee.
Magath, who had joined the club in 2009 with the aim of leading it to a first Bundesliga title by 2013, became the eighth Bundesliga coach to lose his job before the end of the season.
During his first spell at Schalke, Rangnick finished second in the league and reached the final of the German Cup.
He then took Hoffenheim from the third division to the top flight in two seasons. He has also coached Ulm, VfB Stuttgart and Hanover.
